I have grown to adore Shalini Boland's style of writing that incorporates two distant perspectives that converge into a single narrative at the end of the story. Much of the reading I do involves numerous perspectives that do not necessarily converge, or that converge and diverge as the story progresses. This (and her previous novel) are actually convergent at the end, which makes for a unique reading experience. I must also complement Boland's ability to write two *distinct* perspectives. Her writing style enables the reader to tell the difference between Riley's perspective and Liss's perspective. Perhaps her choice to use first person for Riley and third person for Liss plays a large role in this, but other than that, the writing itself is good. Characterization of the main characters, Luc and Riley, is not anywhere near as heavy as the first book. Boland chose to develop other characters instead, which I feel is an admirable choice; they seem to have evolved into center-stage roles by the end of this novel.For a young adult work of fiction, this serves as an extremely easy read, yet it's still pleasurable even to older readers as it does deal with the very real problem of indoctrination. 5/5

It have just finished book two of the series and realize that I feel tense. t just wish Riley would stay at home and be a good girl instead of running headlong into danger. It's a good book that can make one feel engaged. Ruthless megalomaniacs are far scarier than zombies to me and this post apocalyptic England is believable. It is a dangerous world outside. I can see that I will have to read Book 3 to make sure she is okay.
Riley and Luc are back in action much to my delight! Also, an appearance by Connor, Riley's real Dad!
James Grey and his religious army are gathering his troops to lay siege. To say that he is sadistic is an understatement..
If your children were kidnapped and held hostage for 9 + years, would you still have hope of seeing them alive? If so, what mental status would they be in?
Hope that Book 3 is out as this series is something really special....

Highly recommend this entire trilogy. It is very well written and held me in suspense and kept me reading. Even with the same old young girl heroine who goes head strong and hell bent on saving the new world, id tecommend this book to dystopian fiction fans! Not overdone, thankfully! A fesw situations made it feel like I've read this same plot before....but these were well thought out and much better written! This authr has a gift a d I will be looking forward to reading more of ber work.
I read the first book for free and was interested enough to buy the second one and it was even better. The author creates an interesting post-apocalyptic England where some people live in protected and well stocked compounds and other people live out in the wild and barely have enough to survive. Add a weird religious cult with a madman for a leader and things start getting really interesting.
In a planned plot Riley and Loc rescue Lisse , Anna, and Fj from the clutches of the fanatical religious leader Grey. All doesn't go as planned and Chaos results. Amid the mayhem they only manage to rescue Anna and Lisse as Fj has aligned with Grey. An adventure packed sequel in the Outside series.
I ended up editing this book for the author, so I have something of
a conflict of interest in that sense. Full disclosure accomplished.
I gave the first book a good review, and this one deserves
at least the same, if not better. I purchased this book after getting
the first one for free though BookBub. See my review of the
first book (link below) for what I think of this series.

I am only giving them all 4 stars instead of 5 because,
as objective as I can be, that is probably somewhere
around the rating I would give them and that they deserve.
Probably 4.5 stars, actually.
I wouldn't be surprised if people give them a 5 star rating, though.
