Voyage to the Rock
Fr. Matthew Penny

Review by Paula Tishel

This young adult book (middle school and up) by Fr. Matthew Penny is a great read for young Orthodox Christians and adults. The story begins with Martin, a young teenager, very angry and disgruntled that his family is moving from the big city of Boston to a small town in Newfoundland, far away from anything he has ever known and loved. Throughout most of the story, Martin is dealing with his anger, moods and feelings that may seem very familiar to the reader. He also, however, has a spiritual anchor. Martin’s father is an Orthodox Priest. The move to Newfoundland was to start a mission church. Praying together as a family, fasting, having and venerating icons are all a normal part of Martin’s life and this comes up in subtle ways as the story progresses and as the family life is revealed. This pious life and striving is depicted as normal in Fr. Matthew’s book, and I liked that aspect of the story very much.

Once Martin moved to the new house, he discovered something very important. As his father began telling the story of St. Brendan to the family, the story came to life when Martin discovered an ancient cross, a cross probably from 1500 years ago when St. Brendan is said to have traveled to Newfoundland. Martin becomes engrossed with this discovery and refuses to let any adults in on this mystery. He covers up his daily activities. He becomes ambitious, careless about others and more moody. He is also discovering meaning in his life in Newfoundland. Interwoven in this adventure is also the story of St. Brendan’s voyage. The plot thickens with a threatening presence of an adversary.

I loved the fact that when the going got really rough, the author showed the application of Martin’s spiritual life as he slips his prayer rope from his wrist and fervently recites the Jesus Prayer, “Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on me a sinner”. During a particularly difficult moment, fleeing from his enemy, he and his sister antiphonally recited the prayer, adding one to the Theotokos and at times praying to St. Brendan himself for help. Martin’s ambition and selfishness becomes more evident as the story progresses while the reader hopes for a successful outcome. Martin’s conscience clearly bothers him. One hopes he would see his selfishness, seek forgiveness, reveal the truth to his family.

It is wonderful how the life of St. Brendan comes alive in the book, woven into the fictional plot. This is a wonderful read for any youth (and adult) who enjoys a good adventure. Any youth would benefit from the way Fr. Matthew depticts Orthodox life in a modern day story!
Today, too many of our youth (and not a few adults!) are reading books that bring little - if any - edification to their souls. That is why it gives my heart much joy when I am able to give the highest recommendation to a "modern" text written in the 3rd Millennium. Voyage to the Rock is such a text (Another is Everyday Saints and Other Stories, which also available through ). Father Matthew has been gifted with an excellent writing style, and given us a book that is replete with clear lessons in such things as Respect for parents; sibling interactions; proper interaction and communication between parents and their children; the importance of integrity and courage in a person's life; the need to be watchful against the evil forces that are present in the trenches of our daily lives; and the necessity of standing up for truth. What makes the book a treasure, is that these lessons are not given in a classroom or lecture format, but in a story filled with adventure, intrigue, and mystery. Furthermore, Fr. Matthew has skillfully woven the life of the 6th Century Irish Saint - Brendan the Navigator - throughout the text; and this adds another positive note to the book. I highly recommend it for anyone from ages 12 to 112 (Ten/eleven year olds who are avid readers, should also get a lot of joy reading this book. I feel the majority who read Voyage to the Rock will find it difficult to put down, and will be pleasantly surprised by the exciting ending. It is my hope that Fr. Matthew will be led to write other books that have the substance and character of this book.
Enjoyable read for myself & my son.
